Noel Solis was a Vietnam veteran and served his country proudly in the Knights of the Air 114th Aviation Company where he was awarded the Air Medal for his achievement while engaged in aerial combat support of ground forces. He actively participated as a crew member of an Army aircraft in at least 25 combat and aerial missions.
He was born in Donna, Texas, on Jan. 1, 1939. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leopoldo and Manuela Solis; two sisters, Catalina and Argentina Solis; and his beloved wife of 41 years, Virginia L. Solis.
He is survived by his son, Noel H. Solis II (Mary), his daughter, Carol Solis Garza (Arnulfo); his son, David A. Solis; and his only grandson, Noel H. Solis III; brothers, Leopoldo Solis (Corina) of Harlingen, Texas, Carlos Solis (Bea) of Mission, Texas, David Solis (Mary Helen) of Iowa; sisters, Alicia Diaz (+Roberto) of San Benito, Texas, Mitzi Cestero of Sugarland, Texas, Karen Martinez of Harlingen; and his godchildren, Victoria Yvette and Aaron Rodriguez; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Noel retired from Los Fresnos CISD where he was a teacher and a coach. He served a total of 36 years in the field of education. He was loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 22, 2011, with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7 p.m. in the Darling-Mouser Funeral Home Chapel.
Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial to follow at Buena Vista Burial Park. Military rites will be conducted at the gravesite by the VFW Post 2035 under the direction of Luis Lucio.
Pallbearers are Rudy Diaz, Rolando Diaz, Fred Salinas, Mike Ortiz, Edward Anderson, and John Anderson.
Honorary pallbearers are Arnoldo Farias, Ken Ogera, and Jesse Band.
